China hopes to see Mongolia maintain stability
Adjust font size:

China hopes to see Mongolia maintain stability, Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said?in Beijing on?Thursday.

Liu made the remarks on a routine press conference when asked about the riots in the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator caused by parliamentary elections.

As Mongolia's neighbour, China hopes to see smooth development of bilateral relations and normal exchanges of the two peoples.

He said no special measures were taken by the Chinese side at the China-Mongolia border.

Five people were killed and more than 300 others injured in Mongolia's political turmoil on Tuesday, sparking a four-day state of emergency declared by President Nambariin Enkhbayar.

The riots were a result of alleged fraudulent practices in Sunday's parliamentary elections, a competition between the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party and the Democratic Party, the partners of the coalition government.

On Tuesday afternoon, around 1,000 supporters of the Democratic Party and other parties marched in Ulan Bator's central square to protest against alleged fraud in the elections.
