Democrats solidify dominance in US Senate
Adjust font size:

With its hopeful Barack Obama winning the presidential election Tuesday, the Democratic Party has also solidified dominance in U.S. Senate by seizing seven seats from the Republicans in the general elections.

The current Senate consists of 49 Republicans, 49 Democrats and two independents. During the general elections, 23 Senate seats held by Republicans and 12 by Democrats are re-elected.

The Democrats have seized seven seats from the Republicans, projected U.S. TV networks. Adding the seven, Democrats have grasped at least 56 seats in the legislative body, while the Republicans have to try to keep their 42 possible seats.

The networks, however, predicted that the Democratic strategy reaching a filibuster-proof majority of 60 seats in the Senate is unlikely to realize.
