Beijing's environment under the microscope
Adjust font size:

Beijing made seven commitments to the world when it bid for the 2008 Olympic Game. All were achieved in 2007.

Green areas cover 51.6 percent of the total urban area and 43 percent of the city center. Nature reserves make up 8.18 percent of Beijing’s land territory. 25,000 hectares of grass verges and trees have been planted by the sides of roads and railways. All the rivers and canals within the six ring roads have been cleaned up and many riverbanks have been turned into scenic spots.

In 2008, up to April 30, air quality met the required standard on 86 days, 11 days more than the same period of last year. Beijing and its surrounding provinces will close polluting factories and take other measures on to ensure good air quality for the Olympics.

Environmental experts have every reason to be confident that Beijing will fulfill its promise to stage a Green Olympics.
