Netherlands wins lightweight women's double sculls gold
Adjust font size:

Netherlands came from behind to win the gold medal in the lightweight women's double sculls on Sunday, the second and also final day of the Olympic rowing regatta.

Kirsten Van Der Kolk and Marit Van Eupen won in 6 minutes, 54.74 seconds, ahead of Sanna Sten and Minna Nieminen of Finland who took silver in 6:56.03. Melanie Kok and Tracy Cameron of Canada took bronze in 6:56.68.

Kolk and Eupen were in second place by the 1,500 meters, but a later surge helped them win with half a boat length.

The veterans, who won bronze in Athens, punched their fists into the air in great joy to celebrate their first Olympic gold medal.

Chinese crew of Xu Dongxiang and Yu Hua finished in a disappointing fifth in 7:01.90.
