Most Swedes oppose Olympic boycott: report
Adjust font size:

More than 80 percent of Sweden's population is opposed to a boycott of the Beijing Olympic Games to be held in August, the Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet reported Wednesday.

Fifty-five percent of Swedes are opposed to a boycott of the opening ceremony of the Beijing Games, the report added.

The results are based on a survey of 1,000 people by the research institute Sifo between April 8 and 14.

Gunilla Lindberg, vice president of the International Olympic Committee and general secretary of the Swedish National Olympic Committee, said she was satisfied with the poll results, according to the report.

There should not be an issue of boycott with a sports event, she said.

Lindberg raised questions about the motivations of some politicians who have called for a boycott of the Beijing Olympics.

Those who called for a boycott of the games may not even have been invited in the first place, she said.

Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt has confirmed that Sweden has no plans to boycott the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony or the games.
