Newcastle United reported on Saturday that coach Eddie Howe has been taken to hospital and won't be in the dugout for the club's home match against Manchester United on Sunday.

The club published a statement on Saturday afternoon explaining that the 47-year-old "was admitted to hospital on Friday evening having felt unwell for a number of days."

"Medical staff kept Eddie in hospital overnight for further tests, which are ongoing. He is conscious and talking with his family, and is continuing to receive expert medical care," explained the club adding that "everyone at Newcastle United extends their best wishes to Eddie for a speedy recovery, and further updates will follow in due course."

Howe's assistants Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones will lead the team at St. James' Park on Sunday, according to the statement, which didn't say what Howe was suffering from.

Newcastle will go into the match seventh in the Premier League after Manchester City and Aston Villa both won on Saturday afternoon, but a win on Sunday would lift the team back into fourth place in the standings.
