On August 22, 2004, the Munch Museum's Scream was stolen at gunpoint, along with Munch's Madonna. Two masked thieves pulled the work and another painting, Madonna, off the wall as stunned visitors watched. One robber threatened staff with a gun before the pair escaped in a waiting car.

On June 1, 2005, the City Government of Oslo offered a reward of 2 million Norwegian krones (about 250,000 euro) for information that could help locate the paintings.

Both paintings were recovered in relatively good condition in Norway in 2006.
