Guangdong, Shanghai and Beijing are the top 3 Chinese regions with the most non-mainland residents, according to the sixth national census data released by the National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBS) late in April.

The census figures show that a total of 1,020,145 people from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and foreigners were living on the Chinese mainland by Nov. 1, 2010. Of these non-Chinese mainland residents, 593,832 are foreign nationals, 234,829 are from Hong Kong, 21,201 from Macao, and 170,283 from Taiwan.

People from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, as well as foreigners residing on the Chinese mainland were surveyed for the first time in the once-in-a-decade census which began in November last year.
