Designed by Nelson, Wright & Haworth Golf Course Architects Group, Shanghai Sun Island comprises two 18-hole courses, the Old Course and the New Course. Both are "target" golf courses, which are generally flat and manicured tastefully and are easier to play compared to link courses. However, they also pose a challenge to amateur golfers because of the abundance of water hazards in various shapes and sizes. The courses increase in difficulty when there is a strong gale or golfing on a wet day. It becomes more difficult to gauge the right strength or angle of play to get it just right.Sun Island, also known as Mao Island, is home of Mao Pagoda, one of China's five ancient lighthouses which dates back to the Tang Dynasty. Now the Sun Island is a resort that combines golf courses, holiday villas, international conference halls, and hot springs.

Sun Island has won a large numbers of awards, such as a "Top 10 Golf Course in Shanghai" by U.S. Golf Digest. Besides, it has held various kinds of competitions including the Volvo China Open in 1998.
