Wuhan University (WHU) is located in Wuchang District of Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei Province. WHU is widely recognized as one of the oldest and most prestigious top 10 universities in China. Its history dates back to 1893, when it was founded as Ziqiang Institute by Zhang Zhidong, governor of Hubei and Hunan provinces in the late Qing Dynasty (1645-1911). In 2000, a new WHU was created through a merger among the former Wuhan University, Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electrical Engineering, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping and Hubei Medical University. It's a national key university of liberal arts and sciences, with an excellent reputation for academics. Dubbed as "One of the Most Beautiful Universities in the World", it's also famous for its nearly 30 elegant historical buildings amid picturesque campus, especially its cherry blossoms which bloom in the springtime.
