International NGO Save the Children indicated in its latest annual report, "State of the World’s Mothers 2013," that Finland is the best place in the world to be a mother.

The report reveals the conditions of mothers and their children in 176 countries around the globe. The report included all countries with populations in excess of 100,000.

Five indicators, including mothers' maternal health, children's well-being, educational status, economic status and political status, were used to evaluate the countries.

Finland placed top based on its strong performance in all categories and it was, in fact the only country to place in the top 12 for all five indicators. Sweden and Norway ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo takes last place, with levels of maternal mortality, child mortality, educational status, poverty and women’s participation in parliament among the very worst in the world.

China ranks 68th, ahead of large emerging economies such as Brazil, South Africa and India, but trailed behind South Korea and Singapore.

The report, now in its 14th year, aims to save and improve the lives of mothers and their children.
