Professional media research organization The World Media Lab published a ranking of the world's top 500 media companies in New York on Dec. 25, 2013.

The ranking, which was the first of its kind, was based on the companies' business revenues in 2012, involving all the traditional media industries such as television, broadcasting, movies, newspapers, periodicals, books, satellite communications and media services, covering 3,000 media groups from 50 countries and regions.

The average revenue of the top 500 reached US$1.86 billion, and the threshold of the list was US$5.7 million.

A total of 58 Chinese media groups made the list, including 42 from the Chinese mainland. Jiangsu Phoenix Publishing & Media Group was the Chinese media enterprise with the highest revenue, followed by Shanghai Media Group and Hunan Broadcasting System, ranking 69th, 72nd and 80th. West China Media Group was the only media from west China on the list, ranking 394th.

The World Media Lab is part of the World Entrepreneur Group (iCEO.COM), established by Nobel economics laureate Robert Mundell in 2004.
