The overall security situation in quake-hit Haiti is stable but remains potentially volatile. Chinese peacekeepers are helping to maintain order in the capital city of Port-au-Prince under the assignment of the United Nations.

The earthquake has caused heavy losses within the country's local police force. Most police buildings were destroyed. Law enforcement departments have set up their offices in makeshift structures.

The police are now increasing their presence as life starts to return to some semblance of normalcy.

The UN peacekeepers are also helping them to keep order at many sites like this food distribution station.

Hu Yunwang, Officer of Chinese Peacekeeping Force, said, "We deployed about 15 people for the 12-hour service at this guard point. The assignment involves police from many countries and the US Army."

This pile of rubble used to be the building that housed Haiti's tax department. Many important files and documents are now buried under the debris.

Chinese peacekeepers are guarding the building around the clock.

"We have to ensure the safety of the files as well as the property there. We have to make sure they are not taken away by anyone."

The hard work of Chinese aid personnel has impressed the acting special representative of the Secretary-General for Haiti.

The official gave high marks to the Chinese peacekeepers and policemen in Haiti.
