On the last day of the Rome Film Festival, an Italian film about a truck driver's travels across Europe has taken home the top award for best film.

"Tir", by Italian director Alberto Fasulo, triumphed on Saturday, beating out a competition heavy on American films, including Spike Jonze's "Her," starring Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson. The film centres around the cabin of a truck, by which an ex-school teacher from Croatia tries to make a better living, driving all over Europe.

Meanwhile, the title for best director went to Japanese director Kiyoshi Kurosawa for the film "Seventh Code".

Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson took home the best actress, and Matthew McConaughey was honoured best actor for his work in "Dallas Buyers Club".

"Blue Sky Bones", the first movie of Chinese rock singer Cui Jian, was given a Special Mention Prize.
