Over 10,000 police deployed to ensure security in Bangkok: police spokesman

Some 92 police companies consisting of 13,800 police personnel have been deployed to ensure security in the Thai capital Bangkok amid the ongoing "red-shirt" rally, the spokesman of the Metropolitan Police Bureau said Monday.

The police forces have been deployed to ensure security in Bangkok, especially at politically sensitive areas after the recent withdrawal of the army troops, Police Major General Piya Uthayo said, the National News Bureau of Thailand reported.

The army troops withdrawal was made in order to let the army men to take a rest after the Saturday clashes with the "red-shirts ", the spokesman of the Metropolitan Police Bureau said.

The police men have stationed at check points around Bangkok as their duties included checking vehicles, Police Major General Piya said.

Regarding the "red-shirt" rally, riot-control police personnel have been deployed at 12 separate places in Bangkok and suburb areas, said the police spokesman.

The Saturday clashes in Bangkok resulted in the death of 21 people and the injury of over 800 people.

The "red-shirts" have now occupied two places as their main rally site including the Phan Fah Bridge and Rathchaprasong Intersection in the center of Bangkok.

They are pressuring Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to dissolve the House immediately and hold a new general election.
