Floods leave hundreds of people homeless in S. Pakistan

Floods have rendered hundreds of people homeless since torrential rains hit the coastal areas of Gwadar, Jevani and Pasni in south Pakistan early Friday, local authorities said Saturday.

Pakistan navy and other departments are already put on high alert due to the expected arrival of cyclone that was roaring toward Pakistan's coastal areas after hitting coastal areas in Oman, according to local government officials.

Reports suggested that the tropical cyclone Phet is moving toward Pakistan at 12 km/hour and about 300 km away from Karachi and 40 km from Gawadar. Pakistan's Makran, Pasni, Javani areas are also expected to be hit by the cyclone.

More than 7,400 people have already been shifted to 13 relief camps in Thatta city, 10,000 people to 40 camps in Badin, cities in the southern province of the country.

According to the meteorological office, the cyclone will likely make landfall at coastal areas of Karachi and Pesni on Sunday. It will trigger 3 to 5 meters high weaves whereas rain cycle in Balochistan will last for next 48 hours.

So far, 222 mm rain has been recorded in Gwadar. Chief Minister of Balochistan has announced 50 million rupees (about 0.59 million U.S. dollars) for probable cyclone-affected people.

Torrential rains are predicted for Sindh including Karachi from Saturday evening and will continue till Tuesday.

Met office predicted thunderstorm and rains for capital Islamabad, upper Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtoonkhaw, Gilgit- Baltistan, Kashmir, lower Sindh during the next 24 hours.
