China supported the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)'s "indispensable" role in chemical weapons disarmament and non-proliferation, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Wednesday.

Yang made the remarks when meeting with Ahmet Uzumcu, director-general of the OPCW in Beijing.

China has always supported the mission and goals of the Chemical Weapons Convention and had met the obligations set out in the convention in a comprehensive and earnest manner, Yang said.

China will continue to support the OPCW and the director-general's work, Yang said.

"We hope the organization will continue to promote the disposal of all chemical weapons, including those abandoned ones, and make efforts towards non-proliferation and international cooperation," Yang said.

Uzumcu spoke positively of China's effort in observing the convention and its constructive role in the OPCW. He said he was committed to furthering its partnership with China.

Uzumcu took office as the director-general of the OPCW on July 29. The Chemical Weapons Convention, entering into force in 1997, establishes far-reaching rights and obligations aimed at freeing the world of chemical weapons.
