Aung San Suu Kyi, who has become chairwoman of the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD), will run in the upcoming by-elections in Yangon region's Kawmu constituency for a parliamentary seat as one of NLD's candidates, the party sources confirmed Wednesday.

The party top leader's decision to contest in the Kawmu constituency was agreed by its 21-member Committee for Winning the Election.

Kawmu was a constituency in which U Soe Tint of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) won a seat of parliament in the general election held in November 2010 and was named Deputy Minister of Construction by the President, thus leaving the parliamentary seat vacant with the constituency.

The upcoming by-elections were set for April 1 by the Union Election Commission which prescribed the last two weeks of this month as the period of submitting candidate lists for vacant constituencies to be contested by political parties in the upcoming by-elections.

The submission period will start from Jan. 16 and last until Jan. 31.

The NLD, which was reformed with a seven-member central executive committee headed by Aung San Suu Kyi, had vowed to run in the upcoming by-elections by contesting in all constituencies available in the country after it regained legal status.
