World parliamentarians meeting here in the Ugandan capital Kampala for the 126th Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) assembly are set to discuss the Syrian crisis, a conference spokesman said on Saturday.

Lulume Bayiga told Xinhua in an interview that several countries submitted proposals in which they demanded that the Syria crisis be discussed as an emergency.

"We think that the world is holding a spot light on Syria and IPU should be focusing on the issue of Syria to ensure that peace and security takes precedent over any other thing," he said.

The debate, which is expected to end with a resolution on the crisis in Syria, will see the legislators from more than 150 countries joining international efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict.

The latest attempt to resolve the crisis has been made through the appointment of Kofi Annan, as a special envoy to resolve the crisis.

The six day IPU summit which started here on Saturday is held under the theme "Parliaments and the People: bridging a gap."

The over 2,000 delegates attending the conference will also discuss access to health, good governance and distribution of power.

The IPU which was established in 1889 is the focal point for world-wide parliamentary dialogue and works for peace and cooperation among peoples and for the firm establishment of representative democracy.
