Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said here Wednesday that his country will urge the United Nations Security Council to adopt a new resolution on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) over its third nuke test.

Saying at a session of the Diet's upper house, Abe said Japan will seek close cooperation with the United States, South Korea, China and Russia to urge the UN Security Council to pass a new resolution over sanctions on the DPRK.

Separately, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said on Wednesday that Japan welcomes the U.S. draft resolution newly submitted to the Security Council and hopes the document could be approved.

Suga also said Japan is mulling to impose unilateral sanctions on the DPRK.

The United States handed over a draft resolution aimed at financially tightening the DPRK, especially on its capital related to nuke and missile development, according to Japanese media.

Despite opposition of the international community, the DPRK conducted its third nuclear test on Feb. 12, drawing condemnations from many countries.
