Visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged on Thursday BRICS countries to coordinate positions on Syria and stick to political settlement of the crisis.

BRICS, which groups the five emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, should safeguard the U.N. Charter and fundamental rules of international law on the issue of Syria, said Wang at a meeting with his colleagues from other BRICS countries.

He also urged implementation of the consensus reached at this year's BRICS summit in Durban, South Africa.

The informal BRICS summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, produced progress in plans for a development bank and common foreign currency reserves, said Wang.

The five countries should work toward the the establishment of the two mechanisms as part of a financial safety net for the bloc, he said.

He also asked for preparations for the sixth BRICS summit and for efforts to promote trade and investment, financial cooperation, interconnectivity of infrastructure and people-to-people and cultural exchanges.?
