TEHRAN, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Iran on Wednesday announced the reopening of its eastern airspace to domestic and foreign flights.

The decision was made following the approval of Iran's Civil Aviation Organization and the completion of security and safety assessments, given the country's current circumstances, the country's Roads and Urban Development Ministry said in a website statement.

The move aims to gradually restore air traffic to pre-conflict levels, ministry spokesman Majid Akhavan said in the statement, noting that only flights to and from airports in eastern Iran have resumed.

The country had extended the suspension of all domestic and international flights until Thursday afternoon, Akhavan said, citing passenger safety concerns following the recent conflict with Israel.

He added the decision was made "in light of recent developments and to ensure the safety and security of passengers and flights."

Iran closed its airspace on June 13 after Israeli airstrikes targeted Tehran and other areas. Enditem
