JAKARTA, June 26 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian government has canceled its plan to take a 138-million-U.S.-dollar loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to support the national housing program, according to Minister of Housing and Settlement Maruarar Sirait.
"This year, the Ministry of Housing and Settlement will not take any foreign loans, as domestic funding alternatives are already available," Maruarar was quoted as saying by local media on Wednesday.
He noted that the state investment agency Danantara will allocate 130 trillion rupiah (approximately 8 billion U.S. dollars) to the housing sector.
Maruarar also confirmed that the decision had been made in coordination with President Prabowo Subianto.
"I have spoken with President Prabowo Subianto, and we agreed that the Ministry of Housing and Settlement does not need foreign loans. This year, we are operating without any foreign borrowing, thanks to the extraordinary support from the President, Bank Indonesia, the Ministry of Finance, and Danantara," he said.
Earlier this year, the government announced a plan to build 3 million houses for low-income citizens. The ADB had offered a 138 million U.S. dollar loan in February to support the initiative. Enditem
