Drug Prevention Handbooks Distributed

Four government departments of Shenzhen City, south China's Guangdong Province, have issued handbooks on warding off drugs to each of the 240,000 primary school pupils and middle school students.

The handbook contains vivid descriptions of the knowledge of preventing and banning drugs in the form of a cartoon story with illustrations. It is regarded as highly readable, useful, knowledgeable and interesting.

The book gives an introduction to the types of drugs, the formation of drug addiction and the harms done by drugs to human health. It also tells readers how to reject and prevent the abuse of drugs, and teachers how to promptly discover and help students to stay away from drugs, as well as relevant laws and regulations against drugs.

According to the latest statistics, Chinese police cracked a total of 65,000 drug-related cases in 1999, with the number of drug abusers registered with the Ministry of Public Security reaching 681,000, 80 percent of whom were youth and teenagers.
