Besides the degree diploma, English language-related certificates are seen as the most useful type of employment-related qualification in the eyes of many college graduates. For non-English majors, the CET-4 and CET-6 certificates are an important addition to the tool kit when looking for a good job. The College English Test system has had its critics, but it is still the most influential and recognized testing authority in China.

The TEM-8 certificate is a must for English majors who hope to apply for jobs as translators or as personal assistants to foreign executives. Also, the certificates from either the China Aptitude Test for Translators and Interpreters (CATTI), or the Shanghai Advanced-Level/Intermediate-Level English Interpretation Accreditation Examination (SIA) will make English majors extremely attractive to companies' HRs.

Presently, more and more professionals and college students alike are attracted by the internationally recognized Cambridge Business English (BEC) Certificate, which stresses language competency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in both a business environment and common, everyday situations.

The TOFEL and IELTS exams are also useful English-related examinations, but they are not essential.
