Hu Xiaolian has worked in the State Administration of Foreign Exchange for more than 20 years since graduating from the Economics Department of the Graduate School of the People's Bank of China in 1984. In August 2004, she joined People's Bank of China, and was appointed deputy governor of the bank in July 2009.

Earlier this year, Hu proposed that the central bank would introduce "social financing aggregate." It's expected that this new concept will reflect the increasing diversification of the financing resources on the market.
